What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a technique which involves the application of a variety of chemical solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging. By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin, hydration, reduction in pore size, clearing of blemishes, more balanced oil production and an overall healthier skin appearance. Chemical peels smoothen and improve your skin’s texture. The peels work by removing the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. The healing process regenerates new tissues which create the new layer of skin.

Chemical peels are great for a variety of different conditions, including scarring on the face, neck, or hands, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

The peel itself involves applying a chemical solution to the skin and allowing it to sit. You may notice some stinging or discomfort as the solution sits on the skin. Then, depending on the type of chemical peel used, the therapist may apply a neutralizing agent to the treatment area. Most often the entire area is treated at once, but sometimes deeper chemical peels are performed in small sections which allows the therapist to carefully monitor your response and adjust treatment.

Side Effects are Common, but They Should be Mild & Short-Lived

There’s a common misconception out there that chemical peels are really painful or the side effects are severe. Each person will react differently to skin treatments of all kinds, but for the most part, the side effects following chemical peels should be mild and healing should be completed within one to two weeks depending on the depth of peel performed.

Types of Peels

Intensive treatment of acne-prone and seborrheic skin deep cleanses the skin surface of acne impurities for optimal functioning of the pilosebaceous follicle.
Speeds up desquamation, reducing visible pigmentation, inhibits tyrosinase activity, normalizes the activity of hyperactive melanocytes, inhibits the inflammatory and vascular component of hyperpigmentation.
Imperfections in the periocular area: wrinkles in the eyelids (upper and lower) and outer sides (crow’s feet), hyperpigmentation, flaccidity, loss of tissue density, under-eye circles, loss of brightness.

What type of home care should I use after my chemical peel?

There are specific instructions to be followed after your skin peel – this is as important as the peel itself, and is always included at Tempe Holistic Med Spa.

Post care will include occlusive healing balms, epidermal growth factors (cell renewal and wound repair), calming, soothing topicals to reduce itching and inflammation, and always SPF30 Sunblock!

If you are looking for an effective and long-lasting skin care treatment for scarring or any other skin condition, chemical peels are an excellent option. The experts at Tempe Holistic Skin Care can help treat your skin issues with expertise and care. We would love to help you look and feel as great as possible.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results are not permanent, as your skin will continue to age and environmental factors still exist, but results should last for a long time. The deeper the peel and with good home care, the longer the results will last. For a lighter peel, results should remain for a few months, while a deep peel can last several months or years. Monthly skin treatments will help results last longer.
